Wizards fall to Crew

A Roger Espinoza red card 36 minutes into the game made a difficult task loom even larger for the Wizards, who at that point in the game were already down two goals. Claudio Lopez clawed one back with a late game penalty, but the Wizards ran out of time. Kansas City has now lost two games in a row for the first time this season.

Guevara, TFC top Wizards»

A questionable goal from Toronto FC striker Amado Guevara proved to be the difference in a 2-0 loss Saturday at BMO Field. Wizards players thought that both Guevara and another TFC player were offside.
Team captain Jimmy Conrad was the most vocal and received a yellow card from the official for his troubles.

KC Draws with Dynamo»

The Wizards flashed a youthful look against the Dynamo. Rookie midfielder Roger Espinoza garnered his first career start against Houston, as did 2008’s first overall draft pick, Chance Myers, who started at right back. Second year midfielder Kurt Morsink also cracked the starting lineup for the second time this season.

Defensive lapses, lousy luck and a pair of speedy Gambians doomed the Kansas City Wizards in their midweek matchup with the Eastern conference champions. The result should end–or at least table–talk of K.C. as the class of the league. “I’m very disappointed,” said Wizards Head Coach Curt Onalfo.

Hartman shrugs off ‘bottle incident’»

Kansas City Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman is taking in stride the potentially ugly incident that occurred in the waning moments of last Saturday’s game at Toyota Park.
“I’m not really sure what the security set up that they have is but I was actually going to have a sip if it was in was the 89th or 90th but since it was around the 85th, I decided to hold off and just throw it in goal,” said Hartman.

Kansas City enters the match on uneven footing, having suffered a 2-0 loss to Toronto FC last weekend and with a middling 1-1-1 record over their last three games. The Wizards had only just secured the top of the league table from Chicago the previous week before surrendering it to the Crew, who come to Saturday’s match with a three game winning streak.

Both Kansas City and Toronto come to Saturday’s match hoping to continue hot starts and reverse recent history. The Wizards are looking to solidify their position atop the East and finally break the stranglehold New England and DC have on the conference. Toronto, meanwhile, would like to play their way out of the basement for the first time ever and challenge in the East as well. Both teams could use a win Saturday to solidify their early season successes and kick start a surprising new year.

As the Wizards embark on a six game road trip, their season does not appear to get any easier. Kansas City will visit the Chicago Fire this Sunday in a match featuring the Eastern Conference’s top two teams, tied for first with seven points apiece.
